Think Diversity this Reading Olympics!

Dear EVCS Fam,

Today marks the first day of the Reading Olympics fundraiser! Check your child’s backpack for the sponsor sheet and instructions, and start hitting up your neighbors, friends and relatives for pledges.

This year, please encourage your child to read books by a diverse array of authors, and books that feature characters and topics that reflect a diverse range of experiences and perspectives. The sponsor sheet asks for students to log in 10 books (grades PK-2) or 10 hours (Grades 3-5) between now and April 9. All students who participate in the Reading Olympics will get a prize, but students who log in more than half of their list with diverse books will get an extra special prize! On the sponsor sheet simply highlight the books that honor and reflect the experience of LGBTQIA, Native people, people of color, gender diversity, people with disabilities, and ethnic, cultural and religious minorities. If you’re looking for some ideas for award winning books that reflect our diversity, check out some of these lists:

READING OLYMPICS 2018 STARTS MONDAY!

Dear EVCS Families,

The winter Olympics may be over, but the EVCS READING OLYMPICS is just beginning! (for new families- the Reading Olympics is a month long read-a-thon in which kids get sponsors who will give them money for the books they read all month long)

On Monday, March 5, your children will come home with a manila envelope and the Reading Olympics sponsor sheet and reading log. On the back will be everything you need to know to help your child participate in this wonderful fundraiser that gets our kids READING! The envelope is for collecting donations. Sponsor sheets and envelopes will be collected April 9. (you can also collect donations online, btw- it’s all explained on the sheets coming home).

So please look out for the READING OLYMPICS materials coming home Monday!

Happy Reading,
Allison Gordon (mom of Elias- 4th grade)

Reading Olympics 2017 Breaks Record!

Reading-Olympics 1

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2017 Reading Olympics. This year we broke our fundraising record, raising about $7000 for our school! Every contribution helped and our children read so many great books!

Prizes and certificates are coming home this week. I want to congratulate our top earners who each won a Barnes and Noble gift card: Emma Waldroop, Cuin Waldroop and Emmett Sparks. Parents please look out for all the prizes in your kids’ backpacks. If your child turned in a reading log and did not get a prize bag and certificate, please let me know ASAP and I will correct the mistake. (aleegordon@gmail.com)

Thank you again to all our fabulous readers!
Allison Gordon and the Reading Olympics Team

Thank you to the READING OLYMPICS PARTICIPANTS

Thank you so much for participating in this school-wide event and raising money to support our Parents Association. As you know you, the PA helps provide special programs and resources to EVCS that directly benefit our children. If anyone has last minute sponsor sheets and donations to hand in, please find James or Allison Gordon in the yard at pick up today.

Thanks again!
The Reading Olympics Team

Did you forget to hand in your READING OLYMPICS forms and donations?

Reading-Olympics 1

Thank you so much to everyone who has turned in sponsor sheets and donations to your teachers for the READING OLYMPICS. If you have not handed yours in IT’S NOT TOO LATE! You can include cash in the envelopes or if you prefer to write a check, you can make it out to EVCS Parents Association, OR you can use this link for online donations:

LAST WEEK OF THE READING OLYMPICS!

Reading-Olympics 1

We hope everyone has enjoyed reading books for this year’s READING OLYMPICS! We are so proud of all our wonderful readers. This is the last week to complete reading logs and collect donations from sponsors. Maybe use this week to post (or email) a picture or video of your child telling all about the books they have read and ask for donations to support our PA. The link below can be used to collect donations online:

Remember, please give sponsor sheets and donations to your child’s teacher by Monday, April 3.

Thanks so much!

Reading Olympics – Send online link to your sponsor

Reading-Olympics 1

I hope you are all enjoying reading with your kids or watching them read independently for the 2017 READING OLYMPICS!

Sometimes getting sponsors is the hardest part. Consider sending emails to family and friends or posting in Facebook. Maybe have your child make a video about the books they are reading and explain how sponsors can donate $1 per book or hour of reading. Here is the link you can give to anyone who would like to sponsor your child. The money will go straight to the PA and your child will get credit for the donation.

Two weeks to go!

Happy reading,

Reading Olympics and Book Sale

Reading-Olympics 1

The 2017 Reading Olympics is here! Please look in your child’s backpack this Friday for sponsor sheets and information. The envelope included is to collect donations. We are encouraging all students to read and log books throughout the month of March (literacy awareness month) and to collect donations from sponsors for the books they read. But remember, all students who read books and hand in a reading log, whether or not donations are collected, will get a prize for their wonderful efforts!

To kick off the Reading Olympics, there will be a BOOK SALE in the yard THIS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY MORNING.
Please donate your gently used books appropriate for preK through 5th grade students on those days. Books are $1 for paperbacks and $2 for hardcover. We look forward to seeing you there 🙂

Kind regards,
The Reading Olympics Team
