EVCS Diversity and Inclusivity Meeting -April 16th 6PM
The Diversity/ Inclusivity meeting will be holding a friendly gathering/ check-in 6-7PM. All parents/ caregivers of EVCS children are welcome to this informal and open discussion. Come share your thoughts, experiences, ideas and opinions about our school and classroom culture –particularly in terms of diversity (however you want to define it) and inclusion. Childcare will be provided for current EVCS students.
Screenagers Movie at ICE- April 17th 6PM
Our families are invited to a documentary screening of Screenagers. Wednesday April 17th, 6-8PM, at the Institute of Collaborative Education (ICE) M/S-H/S (345 E.15th ). Tickets $10/adults and $5/kids. This film brings a view into growing up in the digital age. A great film to see for both parents and older (4th/5th grade) kids. A brief discussion session to follow the screening.

Our big news is the Spring Auction Gala will be held on a new date April 6th at Performance Space NY (formerly PS122) E. 9th St and 1st Ave. This is a month earlier than originally planned so we need to start soliciting and bringing in Silent Auction items either ASAP or NOW. Last Thursday (12/13) was our December General PA meeting, here’s the recap:
AfterSchool at EVCS is Green Apple Kids
Liza from Green Apple Kids After School came to the meeting to talk about the program and answer questions.
GAK is an Environmental, Science and Art based program for PreK-5th graders hosted at EVCS. Enrollment is “rolling”. Billing is done monthly, the full fee is $400 per month for 5 days a week, or about $20 a day. Kids can enroll for 1 day to the full 5 days a week. They offer a sliding scale for families who need it. Applications are with James in the school office (rm 205), there is no online application, so you’ll need to come into school to sign up. The program has been running at the Earth School for the past several years. The schedule follows the DOE calendar with optional 1/2 day bridge for an additional fee. The philosophy and approach to kids is quite comparable to EVCS’ so you can expect a kind, happy, safe and familiar after-school experience. They do a “digital check-in”, so you’ll get an email when your child has been transitioned from day-school to after-school.

The Venue for the Festival of Lights this year will be East Side HighSchool!

In an attempt to have more seats for everybody, The Festival of Lights – Dec 19th -will be held in the East Side MS/HS Auditorium, 420 E. 12th between Ave A and 1st Ave. Look for more details to come from school.
D1 Family resource center is there for us.
We had a guest speaker from the District 1 Family Resource Center,166 Essex, located in PS 20 next to the District Superintendent’s office. Families should feel free to reach out to them for all things education AND more. They can help navigate all kinds of DOE and City services, including public school enrollment questions- PreK through HighSchool, vouchers for after-school and early child- care and even guidance for finding subsidized children’s health/dental services. They might not know the answer to your question right away, but they will help you find it. They are a great asset for our district and, again, they are there for ALL families not matter what your circumstances. Look for a listing of events and workshops in James’ weekly.
Now don’t go rolling your eyes at us, but we are one step closer to getting new bottle-filling water fountains installed. We approved buying and have ordered 6 bottle filling/ bubbler units and have been assured that the DOE’s Dept of facilities will install them once they arrive. There is no clear timetable for installation, but hope springs eternal…
(There are currently 11 bubblers in the building. CWS has received a grant from the city enough for the other 5 units, which will hopefully be installed before or during ’19-20 school year.)
Holiday Maker’s Fair This Monday, Dec. 10th, 8am-4pm
All day (8am-4pm) Monday EVCS is hosting a Maker’s Fair. Great gifts for everyone on your holiday list including yourself! Bring friends and family! A share of the proceeds goes to the PA. A few vendor tables are still available- contact Lara: firstname.lastname@example.org . Also, items and volunteers needed for the PA bake sale table. Bring items directly to the table… Healthy options in the AM, sweeter treats for the afternoon. Contact email@example.com with questions.
Fundraising Committee next meeting is Friday, 12/14 at Roost 8:40-9:15am

Also Big News- All direct family donations from now until the end of the year will be matched up to $4000 by a generous anonymous donor, that means $50 from you becomes $100 for the kids! Whoot Whoot!
L-Train Riders getting organized
A group is being formed for those in our community- families and staff – who will be affected by the L-train closing. This group will also connect with CWS and District 1 L-train using families. If you would like to join, please reach out to email@example.com for more information.
Diversity Committee Classroom Book Share Readers and Affinity Groups
The Diversity Committee continues to facilitate two great initiatives. First parent/ caregivers are invited and encouraged to come read something that reflects their unique culture or perspective to their children’s classes. Help foster insight, understanding, and empathy for all the different people and experiences at EVCS. Also Affinity Groups of families with a shared experience are forming. PreK mom Trinidad wins our first PA meeting Attendance Raffle!!
This month’s raffle prize was a gift card to the local coffee spot, and friend to EVCS, 9th Street Espresso, congratulations Trinidad and thanks to everyone for coming to the meeting and sharing your voice!

Hi EVCS Parents,
Sending you a quick reminder that our Nov. General PA meeting is this Wed. 11/28 at 8:45am in the auditorium.
We will have a special guest representative from the District 1 Family Resource Center at this meeting to talk to us about all the great things they have to offer. Such as.. variety of public services, info on DOE partnering Community Based Organizations, help with MiddleSchool and HighSchool applications, PreK, Kindergarten Applications, G&T test sign-up, workshops, vouchers for after-school and more.
We also need to vote to approve a capital expense: new Water Fountains! (yes again, come and learn how this time it’s different.)

Thank you to everyone who came out for our PA meeting. Here’s is a quick recap for those of you who couldn’t make it.
Fall Ball is this Saturday (10/27)! 12-4pm. Entrance is Free!
Due to the messy weather forecast we will be moving the event INDOORS. All the same fun, now happening in the Lobby, Auditorium, Cafeteria and the Scaaaaaarrrrrryyyyy Haunted Hallway.
Volunteers are still needed in all departments. Friday set-up starts 5pm. Saturday set-up starts at 9am. Event is 12-4pm, Clean-up is 4-6pm. Sign-up here.
Can’t wait to see everyone Saturday!! Don’t forget to get your picture taken for the Costume Contest in the Auditorium (Contest entry is Free) and get your professional shots taken in the Photo Booth in the Lobby (free downloads or $5 for a print).
FYI: This year it will cost 1 Ticket ($1) to go through the Haunted House and have the bejeezus scared out of you.

Next Wednesday (10/23) is our October General PA meeting 5:30PM-7:30PM.
At the Sept. meeting, we elected 2 members for the School Leadership Team.
This year’s parent members are: Abby Rubin, Craig Harwood, Katie Pawluck, Anne Bouvolo, Cresta Kruger, and Catharine Lyons. Thank you all for giving your time! SLT meets once a month to discuss school policies. Starting Wed. there will be an SLT report given at each General PA meeting. Meeting minutes are posted outside the main office.

For those of you who are new to EVCS, this is a big, fun parent-run carnival event held at school and it takes literally almost every parent to pull it off. To volunteer some of your time -Before, During and/or After- please contact the events committee.

This Wednesday (9/26) will be our first Parent Association meeting of the year! 8:45-10:15AM. Besides the free coffee and tea- Here’s what’s on the agenda, feel free to scroll on through, Cliff Notes are in BOLD:
• SLT Elections- 2 Parent Seats open.
Elections for the 2 open parent seats on the SLT will be held at the beginning of the meeting. Nominations are accepted by email or at the meeting. Each candidate will be asked to very briefly introduce themselves. If you have questions want to nominate yourself or are interested in being on the SLT but can’t make the PA meeting/ election please email email@example.com.
The School Leadership Team is a DOE mandated committee of school staff and parents that meets once a month to discuss school policies and budgeting. EVCS SLT meets every 3rd Thursday from 3:30-5:30pm, the first meeting THIS Thursday 9/27. Members are expected to attend all meetings (10 total). Each member is elected to a 2 year term. • Review and approval of our annual budget
At the start of each school year we must vote to approve our running budget. We will be reviewing this year’s PA fundraising goals and expenses.
Hello EVCS Parent Association Members,
Way to go to all of us who managed to get our kids to school in the loose vicinity of on-time, with clothing on, two shoes (matching or not), found our teachers and classrooms and bestowed our awesome kids to EVCS for what looks to be a dynamite year! It is not always easy, but we’re off to a great start!
The Parent Association would like to extend a big huge warm welcome (back) to all our members. As a person with a child attending EVCS, you are automatically a member of the Parent Association. You’re in! Congratulations!
You will be hearing more from us in the next weeks, but we would like to get a few important dates and ideas afloat.
