PA meeting (Thursday 12/13) recap and other updates

Hello EVCS Families,

Almost there, Just 3 more mornings to get through until Winter Break!

Last Thursday (12/13) was our December General PA meeting, here’s the recap:

AfterSchool at EVCS is Green Apple Kids

Liza from Green Apple Kids After School came to the meeting to talk about the program and answer questions.
Here are some highlights:

GAK is an Environmental, Science and Art based program for PreK-5th graders hosted at EVCS. Enrollment is “rolling”. Billing is done monthly, the full fee is $400 per month for 5 days a week, or about $20 a day. Kids can enroll for 1 day to the full 5 days a week. They offer a sliding scale for families who need it. Applications are with James in the school office (rm 205), there is no online application, so you’ll need to come into school to sign up. The program has been running at the Earth School for the past several years. The schedule follows the DOE calendar with optional 1/2 day bridge for an additional fee. The philosophy and approach to kids is quite comparable to EVCS’ so you can expect a kind, happy, safe and familiar after-school experience. They do a “digital check-in”, so you’ll get an email when your child has been transitioned from day-school to after-school.

ALSO GAK ACCEPTS VOUCHERS. Liza encourages any family that is eligible for vouchers to apply for them. By using the city’s vouchers, families can get their own after school needs paid for in-full by the city, and in turn help support the program for others not voucher eligible (win-win!) Having kids that are paying in full, either through vouchers or directly, helps keep their sliding-scale possible and helps keep the, program sustainable for EVCS. If you are not sure how to apply for after school/ childcare vouchers, or not sure if you are eligible, Start by talking with EVCS Parent Coordinator, James and/ or inquire at the D1 Family Resource Center. As with any city service, receiving vouchers is not especially straightforward, but they are available and worth it!

Average day at GAK, 2:50-6:00PM:
• Start in the lunch room with a DOE provided snack.
• After dismissal is finished and the yard is clear, kids go out to the playground for outdoor play for 30- 45 minutes minimum, when weather is nice kids stay out longer.
• After outdoor-time, kids have 2nd snack time then go to classrooms for an activity.
• PreK-Kindergarteners go to 2nd floor classroom to do an age appropriate group science or art based project. (teachers are EVCS paras Yolanda and Nelly)
• 1st -5th graders go to 4th floor classrooms either to do an art or science based project or go to the “game room” for quieter self directed activities and boardgames.
The projects are on a monthly schedule.
• Dismissal from the lobby 5:45-6PM (or any time earlier)

James can answer many questions about GAK and can connect you with Liza. The program was deliberately started small at EVCS and is growing.
