booksaleThere will be a BOOK SALE in the yard at drop off TOMORROW MONDAY, TUESDAY
(Feb. 29, March 1, 2)

Please bring your gently used books appropriate for our EVCS students (please no baby books or adult books) to donate to the book sale.
If you won’t be able to stay with your children, consider send few dollars with them.

Books are $1 for paperbacks and $2 for hardcovers. Come and get ’em!
There’ll be also Roost coffee for $2 a cap.

The book sale will help kick off this year’s READING OLYMPICS!
Look in your children’s backpacks March 1 for READING OLYMPICS materials. For new parents, the READING OLYMPICS is a month long read-a-thon. It is an opportunity for the students to help earn money for the PA to support things like music and arts enrichment in our school. Students ask for donations from sponsors for all the books they read (either independently or with a family member. And yes, looking through picture books counts!) during the month of March. Details will be on the READING OLYMPICS SPONSOR SHEET.

FYI – Read Across America Day is on Wednesday, March 2!!!

Happy Reading,

Allison and Hagit
(on behalf of the PA)

Next Week at EVCS 02.29.16 – 03.04.16 and Beyond

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Today is the 100th day of school!
We are more than half way through the year.
With Parent Teacher Conferences next week, Multicultural Share coming up and spring around the corner, the days are flying…
It’s that time again to take The NYC School Survey
Each form carries a unique Survey Access Code and online Password.
You will need this envelope provided by teachers to access the form online or to simply fill it out. Please return any physical form to James or feel free to mail it yourself.

Every year, all parents and teachers take the NYC School Survey. The survey ranks among the largest surveys of any kind ever conducted nationally. The information captured by the survey is designed to support a dialogue among all members of the school community about how to make the school a better place to learn.

Mid-year reports

Dear EVCS Families,

It’s hard to believe, but we’re more than halfway through this school year already! Your child’s mid-year reports will be going home today. Please look in your child’s backpack today for these comprehensive reports. Our teachers have been working tirelessly to create these meaningful documents full of examples of your child’s work, areas for celebration, next steps and end-of-year goals. Please review the mid-year reports carefully before your Parent-Teacher Conferences next week.

Your child’s teacher(s) will reach out to your directly (if they haven’t already) to set up a conference. Please be sure to follow-up with them directly to find a date and time that works for you.

If you would like to meet with Maggie (Art), Stephanie (Music), or Reina (Dance) to discuss your child’s progress, please stop in during their open-conference times. All three teachers will be available to meet with you in the Art Studio (Room 413) on Wednesday, 3/2/16 from 5:00-7:30 pm and on Thursday, 3/3/16 from 12:20-2:50 pm.

Also remember that due to Parent-Teacher Conferences dismissal on Thursday, 3/3/16, is at 11:30 am. Please be on time to pick up your children so that our teachers can begin their conferences with other parents on time.

Many thanks and happy reading!

March 3 Half Day Registration

Thursday, March 3 half day programming (11:30 – 2:50)
Movement Creative offers parkour and play based fitness programs to various age groups in diverse settings. Inside, outside, schools, playgrounds, parks. Their philosophy is to center learning through action and careful experimentation. The focus is on identifying personal challenges, safely testing limits and overcoming tangible obstacles by identifying “creative ways over, under or through” those obstructions. All  done within the context of a non-competitive discipline. If you’re still on the fence, here’s a little nudge:* complex-thinking, strength, flexibility, balance, control, creativity and discipline all come into play (literally).

Um…sign me up! I mean…yeah, sign your kiddos up.
Parents: the online registration form must be completed to ensure a spot for your child/ren.Sign up here:

*Fine print: You see the symmetry here, right? Parkour folks actually absorb nudges and negotiate fences ALL THE TIME.

“Controlled Choice” admissions policy, EVCS Recap, CEC Meeting Tomorrow

Dear EVCS families,

Following two town hall meetings, a school wide survey and much discussion, EVCS leadership, which includes the SLT and the PA Executive Board, have decided to move forward with a statement that we feel best expresses our position as a community on the proposed resolution to support a “Controlled Choice” admissions policy in NYC School District 1. The resolution was developed by the CEC, or Community Education Council, to present to Chancellor Carmen Farina at the Town Hall meeting this coming Tuesday, Feb. 23. (For more information on attending the meeting, which offers childcare, visit the CEC website at

A total of 134 people took our survey, and while more families than not supported signing the resolution, and particularly supported the goals of “Controlled Choice” toward providing a high-quality integrated education for District 1 students, many parents expressed questions and doubts about the resolution and how it best supported a workable roll-out of the proposed policy. These were considered substantial enough that EVCS leadership decided to not sign the resolution in its current form, but instead developed the alternate statement below:  Continue reading
