Songs from the East Village

SongsFromEVCS
Dear EVCS families,
What a wonderful, uplifting morning of song and cheer our children (and the parent band) gave us this morning.  At times like these, it is heartwarming to see the talent and passion in our school community.  After watching our kids sing their hearts out, we want to let you know about, especially our newer families, a timeless collection of songs that our student and parent body created just a few years ago, Songs from the East Village. Some of you may have seen the Parent Association selling the CD this morning and at other events and wondered what it is.

Thursday Night’s EVCS PA Meeting Topic: High Stakes Testing

Dear Parents:

In case you haven’t heard, the PA has formed a Community Advocacy Committee to bring to light issues that affect our school community. Far and away the biggest issue we are pondering right now is the enormously complicated issue of testing. We are deeply concerned at the implications of increased high-stakes testing and the ways in which it’s reshaping the learning environment and potentially threatening EVCS’s proudly progressive, civic-minded curriculum.

Please join us this Thursday, at the next PA Meeting, as we discuss our questions, concerns and develop a common understanding of the issues. Childcare will be provided.

New mandates affect our K through 2 students as well. Please make every effort to join us! To get you started, please click here for FAQ on high stakes testing with many links to more info.

Best,
CAC Committee

FAQ – High Stakes Testing and Teacher Evaluation

Question: What elementary grades are currently being tested and when?

A:  Since 2003, students in grades 3-8 have taken exams in the spring (April/May) – usually over the course of 6 days. Last year, the amount of total time for the tests jumped up dramatically. In 2011, third graders took 250 minutes of tests; in 2012, they sat for 540 minutes – 90 minutes a day for 6 days. For 3rd graders with IEPs granting double time accommodations, that became three hours a day for 6 days.

Question: When and how are the test grades available?

CELEBRATE MARY TALBOT!

mary

Friends,

Over more than a decade at EVCS, Mary Talbot has brought her passion for education, for free thinking, for the life of the mind and the spirit, for creativity, for kindness, and for the art of smiling cheerfully in the face of bureaucracy and then carrying on with the important business of listening to individual children and creating vibrant community among them. We have been beyond lucky to have Mary as our Parent Coordinator, and we will miss her dearly.

Please join us on Thursday, December 19, at 5:15pm in the school lobby to send Mary off on her next adventure with much love and a big Huzzah!

See you there!

December 12, 2013

Dear Families,

A couple of things that didn’t make it into yesterday’s letter and shouldn’t wait for next week:

First, LOST AND FOUND: We have a box of lovely items here on the fourth floor that someone must be missing. Please come check by end of day tomorrow. After that, they will go to Goodwill.

POP-UP SHOP FEATURING EVCS CD AND OTHER MERCH: The former deli on the south-eastern corner of our block, at 12th and Ave. C, has been converted into a holiday pop-up shop called “Specials on C” and they are carrying our world music children’s CD, “Songs from the East Village,” as well as totes and t-shirts with EVCS children’s art. They also have a lot of other delightful stuff. Click here to read about it.
