Nov. 26, 2013

Dear Families,

HARVEST FESTIVAL: As you’ve surely heard, the forecast is for serious rain tomorrow, the day of our annual Harvest Festival. Your children have brought in an abundance of cans and other foods, but more is always welcome, and you can bring things in tomorrow morning for delivery to the soup kitchen following our celebration.

This year the Festival of Lights will be back in our own Auditorium on Wednesday, Dec 18. The kids have already started working on their performances and for the last three years the parents have provided accompaniment for some of the classes as well as cheerful, incidental holiday music as the classes get on and off the stage. We’ve also had a sing-along of a couple of popular holiday tunes for the whole community.

If you have an instrument and would like to play you are more than welcome. I will schedule a couple of different rehearsals to try to accommodate everyone’s busy December – So please email me at if you have any ideas, requests or hidden talents!

Look forward to hearing from you,

Martha Kessler

PA meeting this Wednesday morning. DANCE ROOM

Hello Parents,

Please come join us at the PA meeting this Wednesday morning, right after drop off, in a new location, THE DANCE ROOM ON THE FOURTH FLOOR where our dance teacher and featured speaker,Ana Fragoso, will show video of her dance class and be available for questions. After 30 minutes we will relocate to the lobby for a short general meeting (with a couple of important issues to vote on).

Also, don’t forget to order your school photos!
The ordering deadline for school photos had been extended to Monday, November 25. If you haven’t ordered do it NOW! Remember that a portion of the proceeds go back to EVCS!
Orders received by November 25 will be delivered to the school on December 16 in time for the holidays. Orders placed after the deadline will be subject to late handling and shipping fees and won’t ship before the winter break.

See you Wednesday!

Holiday shopping links–please use & share!

Dear Parents,

Over the past 2 years, we have been slowly building up ways to help fund our school without asking for direct contributions. As the holidays approach, I am sharing a couple of links that can make a real difference for the school—please use them, and share them with your friends and family as well!!

Get started: Click the link, and your browser redirects immediately to
How it works: A percentage of what you spend (1%) is contributed directly to the school
Advantage: It’s really, really easy to use
Total raised: $1000+

One Cause
Get started: Click the link above, fill out a profile, and click “SHOP”
How it works: Similar to Amazon, a portion of purchases come back to the PA, but includes literally hundreds of stores, many of which you may be shopping at anyway.
Bonus stores: (2%), REI (2%), Barnes & Nobel (1.6%), AT&T ($60/phone!!), Macy’s (1.6%),
More stores: Land’s End (.08%), JCP (1.2%), and many more
BIG TIP: Orbitz, Travelocity, CheapTickets and many other bucket travel sites are members. Since travel is often a large expense, the kickback EVCS stands to receive can be significant. If you will travel for the holidays or spring break, purchase airline tickets through this portal and EVCS benefits! (It won’t interfere with your rewards programs.)

McNallyJackson Bookstore
It’s not an online offering, but they will give 10% back to the school on your purchase price if you mention “EVCS” at checkout. They are at 52 Prince St, between Lafayette & Mulberry

So…as the holidays approach…please visit these locations to make sure that your purchases will make a difference for our school!

And, as always, to make a direct contribution to your school, including monthly sustainer payments, please visit

Thanks for your support!

Dear Families,

I hope you all heard from your children about the incredible assembly we had last Thursday in the auditorium with Brent Daniels, a musical wizard who introduced EVCS to the magic of digital sound production using the vocals, stomps and claps of our students. I’m not sure I have ever seen so many of our kids dancing at once—or experienced so much unbridled enthusiasm. We’re quite confident that a lot of your kids have a future in the music business. Click here to listen to the song Brent created with our students and here to check out his music technology program for schools.

Dear Families,

So after nine years of mayoral control of our city’s school system—an era that has brought us rampant standardized testing, more than a hundred new, semi-private charter schools, and an insidious erosion of autonomy, funding and creative space in schools such as ours—we may be headed for a pendulum swing in education. As parents and educators, we need to keep a close eye, and measured pressure, on our new mayor and the person he appoints as Schools Chancellor, to push for the kind of enriching, effective, child-centered education we want for our students. It’s going to be an interesting journey.
