Principal Robin Williams has just sent out this email to all parents:
Summer Greetings EVCS Families!
I hope you’re enjoying many summer activities with family and friends. While school opening is still several weeks away, I hope too, that your child is excited and thinking about the first day of school on September 6, 2012.
If you haven’t already received a letter from the classroom teacher, you can expect one very soon. In that letter, teachers will welcome you and share important information to help you prepare for the upcoming school year.
This year, the three schools in our building will operate on the same bell schedule. This will allow us to maximize usage of the shared spaces (movement room, library, yard, etc.).
Please make note of these important schedule changes:
Morning Recess* 8:00
Arrival/Official start time: 8:30
Lunch: 11:50 – 12:40
*Morning Recess is an important time for students to move about and have free play time before the official school day begins, and I encourage students to participate. Historically, CWS arrival has been in the auditorium and we have had the yard space to ourselves for morning recess. However, due to the scheduled renovation of the auditorium, children from both schools will be allowed to play in the yard for Morning Recess. Staff from both schools will supervise students in grades 1 – 5. Pre-K and Kindergarten students must be accommodated by a parent for Morning Recess. All classroom teachers will greet students in the yard at 8:30!
Special Classes and New Teaching Assignments
There are exciting staffing changes at EVCS! To begin with, Roberta Valentine has decided to leave the art teacher position and she has accepted a role as kindergarten classroom teacher. Roberta successfully taught kindergarten, first, and second grades for many years before serving in her role as art teacher. She is very excited about her return to the classroom but says she will also miss working in the art program with the entire student body.
So, who’s teaching art at EVCS? Well, another huge staffing change is the assignment of Yadir Quintana to the art cluster position. With an extensive university and professional background in art — Yadir has an MFA from Yale University and is a working artist — Yadir is looking forward to applying his talents to a comprehensive art program with our students.
Thank goodness Velda is returning to teach our movement program! Velda has new and exciting plans to keep students happy and active. For the first time, we’re pleased to have Kelli Holsopple on a full-time basis, teaching the theatre arts program. So, with regard to our special classes, in the course of each week students will have two periods of art, two periods of movement, and one period in the theatre arts class.
There is yet another significant change in our program for the upcoming school year. The New York City Department of Education is requiring rigorous instructional shifts in mathematics and literacy. Teachers across the city are required to adjust their practice as they deepen and refine the instructional expectations overall. Teachers need time and space in their daily schedule to successfully implement these mandated changes, therefore, to make room for this while still preserving our arts programming, we will not offer Spanish classes for this school year. This spring we will revisit the decision to eliminate Spanish, with the hopes that the program will return September 2013. In the meantime, we will be offering Spanish instruction as part of our wonderful PA-run After-school program. More information on that program and the menu of exciting activities available will be coming soon.
