EVCS PA Meeting – This Wednesday morning

Hi Parents and Caregivers,

This Wednesday (3/26) morning is our March PA Meeting! 8:45 am in the auditorium.

If you can’t make it, the most important thing you need to know is that our Spring Gala is April 28th and we urgently need item donations for the Silent Auction! (online donation form).

We count on the funds we raise at the Gala to pay for so much of the great enrichments the PA supports at EVCS. The Silent Auction is how we raise this money.

This year’s “Free To Be…” Gala is free entry IF you RSVP in advance, otherwise $10 at the door. (RSVP here)

See you Wednesday!

General PA Meeting Re-cap from 2/14/18

Thank you to all the parents who came! Get comfy, here is a re-cap of most of the stuff we talked about…

The Battle of the District 1 Bands is ON!

Get your sitter lined up, ‘cause on March 4th at the New Time: 4:30-7:30PM EVCS’s Family Band will be going up against 3 other District 1 family Bands for the title, trophy and glory! The event will be held at Bowery Ballroom, 6 Delancey. Tickets $20. 21+. (Proceeds will be split between the participating band’s schools.) Buy Tickets here

The 3 School New Bottle Filling Water Fountain Project took a great leap forward.

On Tuesday of this week the three schools’ building wellness committee met with a CWS parent and former DEP deputy commissioner to discuss water and fountain options. He offered a great deal of insight and information about NYC water quality, talked about potential sources of lead in water and gave clarity to the filtered vs unfiltered discussion. It was a relief to learn that NYC continues to have some of the cleanest municipal water in the world (!) and that the risk of a child getting lead poisoning or even elevated lead in their system from drinking water from any NYC public building is basically nil. The committee agreed that we will adjust our objective and pursue getting unfiltered units installed. Since the DOE and DEP considered filtered units unnecessary and are actually against installing them in schools, our requisite for them was holding us up. Changing the type of station we are trying get here removes a big obstacle to getting them!

Fall Ball and PA meeting Recap

fall ball

Hello EVCS PA Member Families,

Once again, we parents stepped up and showed what a creative, fun, generous and devoted bunch we are. The Fall Ball was a huge success! There are way way too many people to thank, really, nearly every EVCS family and many of the staff, in some way, had a hand in this. From the planning, building, baking, cooking and decorating, to the crafts, games, trick-or-treating, dance party and the incredible haunted house, to serving food, manning tables, selling tickets, and cleaning up the whole thing, we certainly came through! Everybody who contributed deserves a giant thank you! We, especially, need to call out Hagit and Noel, our Events Co-Chairs, for taking the reigns on the entire beast. The kids had a blast, thank you, All!

We also thank MFTA, Material For The Arts Located in LIC.
MFTA is a recognized leader in waste reduction. Supporting non profits throughout the city. We are tremendously grateful for their work and support. Our event decor and detail could not happen without them!

A great group of pumpkins were entered in the Carving Contest. The 1st prize went to Nina in 4th Grade with her rat infested jack-o-lantern. 2nd place went to Alex Yakov in 5th Grade with his zombie pumpkin. Adele in 2nd grade and her sister Anna in K made a lit up jack-o-lantern and Yan from 3rd grade’s pumpkin had a giant spider crawling on top. Thank you so much to the contestants and to all the children and families that voted!

General PA (and Fall Ball) meeting Recap

Hi EVCS Families,

In case you had to miss our General PA meeting last Wed. (and the quick Fall Ball meeting after) here’s a recap:

We approved our 2017-18 PA Budget!
This year the PA will be helping fund so many great things at school. The South Street Seaport Partnership, the Recess enhancement program, Dancing classrooms, Chess, Alvin Ailey, Rock Band and much more. Also a big change this year, the PA will be funding the individual Classroom Accounts (aka SAC) which will pay for each classroom’s in-class project work and field trips. In previous years these accounts were funded directly by the classes’ families, this year all classrooms will be funded equitably by the whole PA. This is lining up to be a great and exciting year for our kids!

That said, we, the PA, are called upon to raise these funds. We will do this through direct family contributions, grade-wide bake sales, our fun annual Events, grant applications and other smaller fundraising ventures. We discussed at the meeting that the best way to contribute directly to the Family Fund is by check (or online bank transfer), to save on fees.

We also want to remind families that whether or not you are able to contribute money, the PA always needs contributions of your input, time and sweat equity at all of our events and sales. There are many many ways to help support our school.

We elected 4 new members to our School Leadership Team and we voted in a Co-Treasurer.
Thank you to Anne Buovolo, Cresta Kruger, Melanie Kletter, and Katie Pawluk for joining the SLT this year and representing all of us parents. And thank-you to Kama Geary for stepping up to help with the PA book-keeping!

Help for Puerto Rico.
On Tuesday and Wednesday (10/3 & 10/4) of this week EVCS will be collecting much needed goods for Puerto Rico.
Please bring donations of Diapers • Baby Food • Batteries • First Aid Supplies • Feminine hygiene products. *Only new and unopened items can be accepted. Parent volunteers (Ron B. and Jenny K.) will be stationed with vehicles near the double gates at the end of the closed school yard, towards Avenue C. Once collected, donations will be brought to the Fire House on East 2nd Street.

General PA Meeting 3/22 Re-Cap

Hi Good People of EVCS – In case you couldn’t be at the last PA meeting, here are the highlights – the full meeting minutes are posted on the school’s website.

Refugee Support Project announced.
Students have embarked on a special Syrian Refugee Project. 4th and 5th graders are learning about the plight of refugees and will be spear-heading fundraising efforts to be donated to a yet-to-be-chosen charity. A special storyteller who tells Middle-Eastern folktales will visit with the younger grades. At the culmination of the project the entire school community-parents, too- is invited to a performance by the New York Arabic Orchestra.

PA will fund a New Recess Pilot Program to start after Spring Break!

The SLT (School Leadership Team) has been discussing the two connected subjects of how to increase physical activity of our students and how kids are experiencing and using their recess time. The SLT created a school-wide (K-5th) recess survey and a few members of the team observed different recess periods. According to the survey, most students enjoy recess, but there are 18-20% of the kids who for different reasons either don’t enjoy the time or are struggling to find something to do. The SLT proposed, as a pilot program, having “recess enhancement”. This basically is a physical education specialist on the playground during recess, 2 days a week, organizing voluntary games and activities for any student who wants to join in. The hope is that the kids who are more sedentary during recess will chose join and be more active and those who are feeling shut out or unable to join an activity, but want to, will be taught games and rules, thus perhaps opening a door for them to participate on other days.

The PA unanimously voted to fund the fees (estimated at $1800) for 12 weeks with the instructor and Bradley said the school budget will pay for any additional playground equipment needed. The program is set to start after spring break with former EVCS parent and track coach Aswad as the instructor!

We will soon announce whether the PA will need to do additional and separate fundraising to cover these instructor fees.
