East Village Community School

Student Government

One of our school's prime goals is to prepare young people to become active and informed members of the communities in which they live; to do so, they need meaningful opportunities to participate in the governance of the school community. Those opportunities abound in the classroom, but Student Government offers a special laboratory in which children can practice the democratic process, express conflicting viewpoints in an orderly way, and discover forums for advocating new ideas and initiating school improvements.

The student government is comprised of students from the third, fourth and fifth grades, and two staff advisors. Students must be elected by their classmates for the school year, and they meet weekly, at lunchtime, with staff advisors. Last year, the student government initiated School Spirit Week, the school clean-up challenge, and a Mother's Day plant sale that raised over $200 for student activities. This year, they also took on the role of Penny Harvest Leaders, and helped raise and allocate $500 to two local charities, Trinity's Service and Food for the Homeless, and the Lower East Side Ecology Center.
