East Village Community School

Welcome Parents!

Welcome Families! EVCS is a wonderful school where your voice as a parent/guardian really counts and where your participation is welcome at every level of school life. Our school works as a team to be inclusive - teachers, staff, children and parents. Parents working to improve the quality of our children's education is part of the school's mission. Our activities include community building, maximizing parental involvement, fundraising and advocacy.

Many of the school's most important--and most fun!--events are parent-led: In October, we hold the Fall Ball in which we celebrate many traditions. The haunted house is the creative work of the parents and the children look forward to coming to the ball in costume. Our annual gala, "The School of Fusion," led by parent musicians, raises funds to support arts and music programs and is wonderful opportunity for parents to dance, laugh and socialize. Over the course of the year, we organize bake sales and design and sell T-shirts to raise funds to support our many activities and programs.

The Parents Association meets once a month in morning and evening rotation but our various committees meet in between to get the job done. We have also addressed issues such as increasing partnership with teachers: as a result of our efforts, teachers now meet with the parent body every other month, and parents are also welcome to visit classrooms on Family Fridays and to meet informally with the principal for a coffee hour. We have also worked to increase physical education, renovate the playground, and support families in crisis.

Our aims as a Parent Association are: to foster and encourage parent participation on all levels; to provide opportunities and training for parents to participate in school governance and decision-making; to provide support and resources to the school for the benefit and educational growth of the children; to promote and help develop a cooperative working relationship between the parents and  staff of our school; to develop parent leadership; to organize community-building events such as potluck suppers  and  new parent meetings and workshops for parents on progressive education, on our educational philosophy and on what makes our school special; to be a source of/communicator of information, advice, counsel to other parents in the community; to act as a collective voice advocating for the students and parents with issues like classroom management, curriculum and other things that come up and be mentors for new parents; to help to make the curriculum known and understood by a wider group of parents and  move toward more parent-teacher collaboration; to follow through with community fundraising tasks, such as banking and identifying fundraising needs at EVCS; to set goals; to be a recognizable body of people in the school community with a clear role; and to offer representation of EVCS at district wide and Community Education Council meetings.
