School Wide Morning Meeting Message 9/18/2017

Dear EVCS Students,

Welcome to the first School-Wide morning meeting of the new school year!  Every other Monday morning our whole school community will get together to sing songs, share things we’ve been working on in music class, and think about what is most essential in our learning.  SWMM is one my favorite traditions we have at our school.

At each SWMM we will reflect on one of our core values.  These are the things that are most important to us, and are universal and relevant no matter what grade we are in.  Our core values represent what we stand for at EVCS.  Since it’s our first SWMM and it was a long summer, so some of us may have forgotten, let’s review what each of our core values is.

Our Core Value is kindness.

Kind people show concern for others, for our school and for the environment.  Kindness can be shown through compassion, empathy, generosity, and service.  Kindness is maybe the most important thing to have in a community.

Our core value is inclusion.

Our school’s mission statement says that all children and all families at our school should feel welcomed, cared for, valuedand supported.  This is the essence of inclusion, and it is something that we all have a responsibility to uphold at EVCS.  Regardless of what your family structure is, what culture you belong to, or what your abilities and interests may be, all students and families at EVCS are members of our community – and we are a greater community when everyone is included!

Our core value is social action.

Social action involves identifying things that are wrong in our world and then taking steps to make them better.  Sometimes the way to make the world a better place is by making a small impact right here in our own community.

Our core value is self-awareness.

Though it is very important to think about the community, it is also very important that we know ourselves, and that we learn to reflect on our work, our words and our actions.  We should always strive to improve and do our personal best.  People who are self-aware are able to set meaningful goals for themselves and also tend to have well developed emotional intelligence.

Our core value is joy of learning.

Students at EVCS get instruction in art, music, dance, gardening, chess, and technology every week, and get to go on frequent field trips and work with visiting teaching artists.  We want your experiences at school to spark wonderment and awe and a love for learning!

Don’t worry if you can’t remember all of these core values, or if you don’t understand exactly what they mean or how they apply to our learning at school.  We’ll explore them together throughout your time at EVCS, and your understanding of these core values will become deeper each year.

Big thanks so much to all of the parents who came this morning, huge thanks to the SWMM house band, and thank you to everyone who sang loud and proud. Have a great day and great week everyone.

Love,

Bradley
