Mark your calendars!

Dear EVCS Family,

The first full week is almost in the books, and though we are still getting used to some new routines for arrival, dismissal and recess, things are starting to settle in. There are a few important things coming up that I want to make sure are on everyone’s radar.

School-Wide Morning Meeting

This coming Monday we will have our first School-Wide Morning Meeting of the year. For our new parents – SWMM is one of our very favorite traditions. Every other Monday morning our entire school gets together in the auditorium shortly after drop off for a sing along. Parents are welcome (encouraged!) to come, sit with their child and sing loud and proud with us. The vibes are guaranteed to be good.

Curriculum Night

This coming Tuesday evening is Curriculum Night. This is where you will hear from your child’s teacher about all of the awesome stuff your kid will learn and experience this year, and you can have all your questions about curriculum, homework, snacks, field trips… answered. We’ll start gathering in the lobby around 5:30 to mingle and schmooze, and opening remarks will be in the auditorium at 6:00. Unfortunately, childcare will NOT be provided for this event. Sorry about that – please try to line up a sitter.

School Leadership team

One way parents can get involved in the school in a meaningful way is to join the School Leadership Team (SLT). The SLT is made up of 12 members – half staff and half parents. We meet once a month, generally on a Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30, and work together to develop our school’s Comprehensive Education Plan (CEP), annual goals, and related policy issues. This year we have three open seats for parents, so think about running. If more than three parents express interest an election will be held at the first Parent Association meeting of the year, right after drop off on September 27th.

District 1 Diversity Initiative

Though the Lower East Side and East Village are incredibly diverse neighborhoods, all of our District 1 public schools don’t accurately reflect that diversity. Most of you know that last year our school participated in a pilot program to bring greater socioeconomic integration in our school district. This year District 1 is expanding on that effort by including every District 1 school in the initiative, beefing up the target numbers for priority in admissions, and opening a Family Resource Center. More information on the initiative is available here in this letter from our Superintendent Daniella Phillips – and I will be holding an information session on September 25th at 8:50 in the auditorium. Please come to that if you would like to learn more about the initiative or if you have questions about how it will impact our school(s). I’ll provide the coffee.
